Colorful hammocks hung in the turquoise-blue water of Paradise Lagoon

If there’s one image that sums up Jericoacoara for first-time visitors, it’s hammocks hanging in a turquoise-blue lagoon. That’s Paradise Lagoon, in Jijoca de Jericoacoara, about 20 to 30 minutes by buggy from the village.

Paradise Lagoon

It’s a freshwater lagoon, warm and incredibly clear, surrounded by white sand. Along the shores are beach bars and restaurants with hammocks, chairs, and lounge chairs in the water. The whole thing is exactly what it looks like: lie back, float, have some fish, and think about nothing.

Some beach bars charge a minimum consumption or a fee to use the hammocks. Worth asking before you settle in.

Blue Lagoon

Neighbor to Paradise and usually visited on the same tour, Blue Lagoon is a bit quieter. It has equally clear waters and is great for families, since much of it is shallow and calm.

When to go

The lagoons depend on rainfall. They tend to be fullest and most beautiful in the second half of the year, after the rainy season at the start of the year. In years with little rain, the water level drops — but they’re still beautiful.

Midday light makes the water most turquoise. If you’re going for photos, plan to be at the lagoon between 11am and 2pm.

How to get there

  • East buggy tour: the most common way. Combines the lagoons with the Sloth Tree and Blue Hole in one day.
  • Quad with guide: the long tour gives time to stop at the lagoons for a swim.
  • Open-top truck or shared transfer: collective options leave from the village; less flexible, but cheaper for solo travelers.

What to bring

Swimwear, sunscreen, a hat, a towel, and money or a card for the beach bars. A waterproof phone pouch helps a lot with photos in the lagoon.
